Dalhousie offers a hands-on MD training program with numerous opportunities for students to gain real-life clinical experience throughout their four years of study. In fact, first-year students begin meeting patients during their very first week of medical school. The MD program is divided into three sections: Med 1 (first year), Med 2 (second year), and the clerkship (third and fourth years).
During the first two years, Med 1 and Med 2, students build a foundational understanding of medical knowledge, focusing on human anatomy and the various systems of the body. These years also integrate other key aspects of healthcare, such as ethics, into case-based learning.
Although students are introduced to hospital and clinic settings early in their training, the clerkship years provide even more opportunities to apply their learning in clinical environments. By working in large hospitals and small clinics throughout the Maritimes, students are exposed to a diverse range of patients and medical specialties, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in a variety of settings.
Dalhousie Medical School graduates integrate their knowledge, skills and attitudes for competence in four principal and interdependent areas of achievement: as professionals, as community contributors, as life-long learners, and as skilled clinicians.
