Working with University of Ottawa professors, students develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to effectively comprehend and communicate ideas in an academic context. They learn the discourse structures, grammar, and vocabulary required for effective communication in their fields of study and develop critical thinking and study skills.

Students gain additional mastery of the French for Academic Purposes skills practiced in the program, with an emphasis on oral comprehension and expression. In addition to developing their listening and note-taking skills by completing tasks that utilize lectures and presentations from a range of academic disciplines, students also develop their skills giving academic presentations and collaborating on group assignments.

Students develop learning strategies and study skills necessary for success at the University of Ottawa. Through this workshop they acquire an awareness of the academic culture of Canadian universities, along with a bank of campus and community resources, while having opportunities to reflect on the intercultural skills needed to connect with professors and classmates on campus.

I picked the university of Ottawa because they offer a collaborative program with Algonquin college in the rural area that I live in. Opting to pick this university was the best option for me because it enabled me to save a lot of money. I applied to 3 different universities and it was one fee for all 3 applications. I had a very good grade 12 academic background which enabled me to be accepted into this competitive program. In my opinion the course curriculum could be revised. In fact, in the first year we have no clinical experience. It is only theory in the first year. I think starting clinical experiences in the first year would be very helpful for students in the program.
