The RPN Refresher program is for registered practical nurses (RPNs) including internationally educated nurses (IENs) who have been out of practice for three or more years and may also have gap competencies in their education. The curriculum is customized to meet the needs outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), including clinical hours and educational requirements.

The RPN Refresher is a comprehensive and accelerated program that is offered in a blended online and classroom format with four theoretical courses and one laboratory course.

  • All students will attend a lab class on-site on Sundays for 15 weeks.
  • Students will spend one additional full day per week online for 15 weeks.
  • In addition to the lab session and one full day class online, students are required to complete self-directed study (2-3 days per week) to complement classroom work.

After the successful completion of the first term, students will be eligible for clinical practice. The program offers a 400-hour clinical practicum as required by the CNO, with a supplementary 200-hour clinical practicum if needed. Please note that the supplementary clinical course RPNR 020 comes with an additional fee of $578.20.

Admission Requirements

  • Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
  • Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) with RPN designation
  • Evidence of Safe Practice letter from the CNO
  • Competency Assessment Form letter from the CNO
  • Canadian Citizenship or PR status

I have completed my second semester, so about 8 months, at North Campus in business. It's a BIG campus with a great vibe, food options and classrooms and facilities.

The professors are pretty good. Out of 12 courses, 11 professors were outstanding and one was just okay. They are respectful and make sure you understand the materials. My Principles of Management prof is a favourite. He would teach for 30 minutes then do in-class exercises and simulations designed to teach us how to run different companies and compete against classmates. It was amazing. You learn by doing and he would walk around to help us communicate within teams and manage time and learn how a business works from the inside out.

Student support is also outstanding. Blackboard is used to get assignments and grades, and to communicate with profs. It's not the best, but IT support is available in minutes if you need help. I know plenty of students who use academic services like the writing centre and counselling too who say only the best things.

Last but not least is campus life. It is really good. People at least in business work hard but also have fun. It's a multicultural campus with people from India, Canada, China, Brazil, London, you name it. This has added so much to the experience and I'm proud to study here.

Humber College is a great college and the Writing Centre is world class. I spent a lot of time there polishing my papers in first year! They take care of their students, whether it's through great insurance coverage, free tutors in first year or counselling and career services.
