About
Personal Support Work (PSW)
Demand for Personal Support Workers (PSWs), who assist the elderly and individuals with illness or disabilities, is expected to rise rapidly over the next decade. That’s in part because the total share of Canada’s population aged 65 or older is growing. By 2030, Canadian seniors will number 9.5 million and make up 23 percent of the country’s population — up from just 15 percent in 2014.
Fully accredited PSW courses and certificate programs, typically lasting up to one year, will give students everything they need to begin a career helping others maintain fulfilling lives. Training will consist of hands-on learning and at least one practicum, often including supervised work in a long-term or palliative care setting. Many students will also be exposed to practical nursing, registered nursing and social service work as part of an interdisciplinary approach to caring for vulnerable populations.
PSWs, also known as Healthcare Aides, Patient Care Aides, Nursing Attendants or Hospital Attendants, may work in a variety of settings, ranging from hospitals and long-term care facilities to individual clients’ homes.
