Educational Support

The Educational Support program at Mohawk College equips students with the skills and knowledge to make a meaningful difference in the lives of exceptional students. Graduates are in high demand across all school boards, with many securing positions upon graduation. This program prepares students to provide vital educational assistance to students experiencing physical, emotional, or behavioral challenges, working in both inclusive and specialized classrooms to enhance student learning and development.

Students will learn to provide educational support in compliance with relevant education-related legislation, policies, and health and safety regulations. The program emphasizes collaboration with Individual Education Plan (IEP) teams to develop and implement strategies that promote positive school climates and support the academic, social, and emotional growth of learners. Participants will also gain hands-on experience in assisting with IEP development, supporting learners in daily living activities, and utilizing assistive technologies to enhance educational experiences.

Through the program, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to promote pro-social behavior, support students in becoming more independent, and monitor and report on student progress. They will also be encouraged to pursue ongoing personal and professional development to stay current in the field. This program is designed for those passionate about making a difference and supporting students with exceptionalities in their educational journeys.

Admission Requirements

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.

What You’ll Learn

• Understand the role of an educational assistant on a school team.
• Develop skills to work with and support students with exceptionalities across a variety of settings – elementary, high school and college.
• Assist students with academics, behaviour, life skills and personal care in a school or alternative setting.
• Utilize technology and implement strategies to maximize student learning and success, an IPad is required to use the many Education Apps available.
