Master of Social Work

Université de Montréal’s Master of Social Work program provides advanced training for students pursuing careers in professional practice, research, or post-secondary teaching within the field of social work. Recognized by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education, the program strengthens students’ understanding of the theoretical, philosophical, and institutional foundations of social work while encouraging critical reflection on professional methods and practices. Through advanced coursework and applied learning, students develop both analytical and technical skills tailored to specialized areas of social work intervention and research.

The program offers two pathways: a thesis option for students interested in research or academic careers, and a non-thesis option with an internship for those focused on advanced professional practice. Both streams emphasize project-based learning and allow students to deepen their expertise through either a research project or field placement in institutional or community settings. Students explore social issues, research methodologies, and specialized fields of practice while benefiting from opportunities such as international internships and elective courses that broaden professional and global perspectives in social work.

Admission Requirements

• Baccalaureate, Bachelor’s degree; duration of 3 years, or other undergraduate diploma deemed equivalent.
