This diploma is designed for teachers, early childhood educators, and other early childhood professionals who are interested in enhancing their professional practice with young children (pre-school to grade 3).
This diploma consists of the following four core courses (12 credits):
- Foundations of Curriculum and Instruction in Early Childhood Education
- History of Early Childhood Education
- Supporting Young Children Through Home, School, and Community Relationships
- Observation and Documentation in Early Childhood Settings
Plus a minimum of three electives courses (9 credits) from the following list:
- Introduction to Early Childhood Education and Care
- Supporting Young Children’s Health and Well-being in Early Childhood Settings
- Early Learning Curriculum in the Pre-School Years
- Supporting Early Learning in the Pre-School Years
- Supporting Learning in The Primary Years
- Kindergarten Curriculum
- Supporting Learning in the Kindergarten Year
- Advanced Studies in Early Childhood Education
- Supporting Indigenous Infants and Young Children within the Context of Their Communities
- Selected Topics in Early Childhood Education
Plus three additional ECED electives or approved Faculty of Education elective courses in related fields (9 credits).
Admission Requirements
The 30-credit Early Years Education Diploma (EYED) is open to applicants with one or more of the following:
- BA, BEd, BSc or related degree from a recognized university
- Diploma in Early Childhood Education from an approved community/university college program, or equivalent
- 15 credit Certificate in Early Years Education (EYED) granted by the University of British Columbia
- Some college or university course experience and relevant professional experience in related fields such as nursing, psychology, social work, child and youth care, occupational therapy, child development, etc.
- Relevant professional experience in related fields such as teaching, nursing, social work, child and youth care, occupational therapy, infant/child development consultant and/or supported child development consultant in childcare settings, etc.
If enrolled in the Diploma program, you have 5 years to complete all 30 required course credits. This five-year time period is counted from the date of the first course started.
