Hosted on Coursera, this fully online program provides all the skills required to find an entry-level job in the field of data analytics.

In the Grow with Google Data Analytics certificate program, students are introduced to the world of data analytics through a hands-on curriculum developed by Google. Students develop in-demand data analytics skills using spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau, R, and more. This will help equip students with the skills needed to apply for entry-level data analyst roles.

Students learn data types and structures, how to use data to solve problems, and how to analyze data.

Google Career Certificates cost US$49 per month on Coursera after an initial 7-day free trial period. All Google Career Certificates are completely self-paced. At about 10 hours of study per week, many learners complete a Google Career Certificate in three to six months.

What You’ll Learn

  • Foundations: data, data, everywhere.
  • Ask questions to make data-driven decisions.
  • Prepare data for exploration.
  • Process data from dirty to clean.
  • Analyze data to answer questions.
  • Share data through the art of visualization.
  • Data analysis with r programming.
  • Data analytics capstone project: complete a case study.

I got a lot from this course but found it hard to finish. The instructors (all video recordings) were reading from scripts and they really lacked energy and everything felt rehearsed. I left craving a human touch to the course. I'm sure they will get better but online education at this scale will always miss something that only a classroom or live training can provide.

This is a great initiative by Google, but I thought I'd be getting something more like a real college certificate. People need to understand that you don't have professors or instructors helping you and motivating you. You don't have a cohort or class to learn with, joke with, grow with. Google touts its large employer network, but no one at Google is in your corner helping you with your resume and networking and job search.

The curriculum is good and you can learn a lot if you're self-motivated, but I think Google oversells and overhypes what they can do. As a starting point this is great, I just wouldn't expect to complete this and land yourself a job. For most people, this just won't be enough.
