The Best Colleges in Vancouver of 2024

By:
Last updated January 23, 2024

If you’re looking to attend college in the Greater Vancouver Area, consider buying an umbrella (or two – you’ll probably lose one). There’s a reason British Columbia is often called the “wet coast.”

But don’t let that dampen your enthusiasm about going west for school. Colleges in the Lower Mainland and across the province allow you to matriculate in one of Canada’s — indeed the world’s — most livable cities, while offering hands-on training that will prepare you for in-demand careers. Aside from the breathtaking Coast Mountains and Pacific Ocean, Vancouver and other B.C. communities are home to a wide variety of world class dining, concert venues, theaters, festivals, libraries, and museums.

The province’s colleges offer comprehensive and specialized training opportunities, depending on the institution and its location. In downtown Vancouver, the city’s oldest community college, Vancouver Community College, has programs spanning arts, sciences, hospitality and tourism, offering hands-on training that serves the community itself, through restaurants, transportation firms, government and skilled trades, for example. Like many major cities, Vancouver has a strong technology scene, so if coding and cybersecurity are your jam, you’ll have opportunities to find a co-op placement and full-time employment locally upon graduation.

Traditional colleges are not the only option for trending technology training – there’s several coding bootcamps to choose from that focus on different aspects of coding, digital design and data science, in accelerated formats engineered to help students gain job-ready skills.

Vancouver colleges also offer many options for those looking to upgrade their skills while they work, as well as programs specifically designed for those looking to make a career change or for corporations looking to deliver employee training. And if all you need is a specific certification to drive or inspect a big rig for a living, or operate certain equipment, you can write your own ticket.

Whatever you’re looking to learn, B.C. colleges are a great jumping off point, whether you want to stay at one school for several years or transfer somewhere else, including to the province’s universities. But no matter where you go, you’ll be surrounded by Vancouver’s famed coast and mountains, with access to year-round activities that are just as nurturing for your brain as the education you pursue.

British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT)

vancouver-colleges
4.85/5
$ $ $ $

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) offers what it touts as “education for a complex world.” This well-established technical school distinguishes itself from a traditional university or college with practical, flexible, applied education delivered by instructors who have direct, hands-on experience in their field. BCIT is also focused on meeting the demands of local employers, which includes a need for technology workers such as security systems technicians and software systems developers. Most recently, it introduced “microcredentials” – short, for-credit, modular programs or courses that help students quickly master new skills and gain knowledge essential in Canadian industries, such as Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) Fundamentals in collaboration with the Vancouver Board of Trade.

What Students Are Saying

I graduated from the CST (Computer Systems Technology) program in 2017. I didn't see that on the list here so I picked a related program. The experience was very good and oriented to getting that first job. My salary went from $58,000 to $170,000 in less than 5 years working in software engineering. The pandemic gave us engineers a boost, but I had the skills and had "learned how to learn," and so my career has shown that. BCIT gave me a great start in this industry.

Vancouver Community College

2.5/5
$ $ $ $

The largest and oldest college in Vancouver lives up to its name – the school is well intertwined with the community it serves.

Just about every single one of the college’s programs require that students combine their academics with hands on training at local businesses. You need not look any further than its hospitality programs. Students who study culinary arts students get a chance to help run JJ’s Restaurant at the downtown campus, while the Four Corners restaurant and the Seiffert Market are run by VCC hospitality management students. Meanwhile, students enrolled in the hair design and esthetics programs run a salon on the college’s downtown campus that offers hairstyling and esthetics.

VCC’s offerings span the arts, business, trades, and health sciences with one-year certificates, two-year diplomas, and four-year bachelor’s degrees, and the college has a strong focus on accessibility for students with disabilities as well as improving levels of participation and success for Aboriginal students as a member of the Coastal Corridor Consortium.

What Students Are Saying

City centre at Vancouver Community College is hand-on: skilled trades, cooking, nursing, hairdressing, and so on. Pre-university students more choose Langara and Douglas or BCIT for IT courses. Had a great time here learning auto foundations.

The college focuses on making it easy for students to transfer to Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, as well as universities across the country, while emphasizing hands-on experience through work placements, field schools, field trips and labs.

What Students Are Saying

Small class sizes with good ratios of students to teachers and so many ways to transfer to universities if you're so inclined. Programs are top-rate, and tuition is really cheap. Both campuses are close together in a beautiful wilderness landscape. Loads of amenities like the stadium, gym and theatre, and transit is a piece of cake with a U-Pass. This is a great school and I can't say enough good things about my experience here.

What Students Are Saying

BrainStation is the future of education and an excellent alternative to traditional college programs. I didn't need to wait until a whole new semester to start learning, they had diplomas starting all the time, online with live instruction with loads of valuable online resources. The instructors are second-to-none. I had access to amazing teachers from top tech firms and was simply blown away by their intelligence and passion for helping students. The curriculum is very good and the projects let you apply everything you learn as you go. There's some theory, but the perfect balance. The last thing is how awesomely flexible everything is. 1. I attended BCIT and agree it’s probably the best in the province. No question it’s the best for technology and a lot of silled trades.

  2. Thank you for including so many options here from trades schools to community colleges with an Indigenous focus!

  3. Found this on bing and glad I did. I have always been interested in a criminal justice career but didn’t know JIBC existed! Thanks.
