Students in the Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate program learn the fundamentals of digital marketing and e-commerce to gain the skills needed to land an entry-level job.

Digital marketing involves using email, social media, search engines, display advertising, and other online channels to attract customers, encourage them to make purchases and keep them coming back. E-commerce involves using online platforms to sell products and services, which includes designing online stores, crafting product listings, conducting market research, and analyzing store performance.

Students will learn popular tools and platforms, such as Canva, Constant Contact, Hootsuite, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Shopify, Twitter, Google Ads, and Google Analytics.

Google Career Certificates cost US$49 per month on Coursera after an initial 7-day free trial period. All Google Career Certificates are completely self-paced. At about 10 hours of study per week, many learners complete the Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate in six months.

What You’ll Learn

  • Developing digital marketing and e-commerce strategies.
  • Attracting and engaging customers through digital marketing channels like search, social media, and email.
  • Measuring marketing analytics and sharing insights.

I got a lot from this course but found it hard to finish. The instructors (all video recordings) were reading from scripts and they really lacked energy and everything felt rehearsed. I left craving a human touch to the course. I'm sure they will get better but online education at this scale will always miss something that only a classroom or live training can provide.

This is a great initiative by Google, but I thought I'd be getting something more like a real college certificate. People need to understand that you don't have professors or instructors helping you and motivating you. You don't have a cohort or class to learn with, joke with, grow with. Google touts its large employer network, but no one at Google is in your corner helping you with your resume and networking and job search.

The curriculum is good and you can learn a lot if you're self-motivated, but I think Google oversells and overhypes what they can do. As a starting point this is great, I just wouldn't expect to complete this and land yourself a job. For most people, this just won't be enough.
