Social Service Workers (SSWs) support individuals facing social and personal challenges, often rooted in broader societal issues such as marginalization, oppression, stigma, colonization, and intergenerational trauma. Drawing on knowledge of human development and behaviour, SSWs use counselling and advocacy skills to help individuals, families, and communities access resources and make positive life changes.
Graduates are prepared for diverse roles, including case work and frontline positions in government, group homes, community agencies, corrections, and more. Students can pick from specialization including mental health, addictions, immigration, youth services, gerontology, and income support. To use the title “Social Service Worker” in Ontario, graduates must register with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).
