The Medical Laboratory Technician program at Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology in Hamilton is a comprehensive training pathway designed to prepare students for essential roles within the healthcare system. This program equips students with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to perform tasks such as specimen collection, electrocardiograms (ECG), Holter monitor placement, and specimen processing. The academic component of the program is delivered through a flexible series of online courses, allowing students to balance their studies with personal and professional commitments.

To complement the theoretical learning, students participate in an in-person Laboratory Basics Workshop at Mohawk College, where they are introduced to fundamental lab skills. Following this, they advance their practical training through two specialized laboratory courses held at Anderson College, also located in Hamilton. After successfully completing these courses, students consolidate their knowledge in a four-week, full-time, unpaid clinical placement coordinated by Mohawk College. This placement provides real-world experience in hospital and private laboratory settings.

Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for both the National and Provincial Certification Examinations for Medical Laboratory Assistants/Technicians, making them well-prepared to enter the workforce in this critical healthcare field.

This is my second time attending this college, when I attended years ago it was a very different experience. The school held many events, frosh week was always a blast, the campus is massive, free gym membership on campus, and they have great selection of food, downside was parking was usually a nightmare. This year is a bit different, with classes online its a bit hectic, confusing and I knew it would be. In my course the professors are very supportive, the layout is making a bit more sense each day, the it department have been fantastic. One thing I will say is that it can be a bit difficult to get some answers from certain departments, but my course professors are doing a great job so far!
