Wilfrid Laurier University’s Computer Science program provides a balanced combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Students are given the opportunity to engage in co-op placements, participate in competitions, and collaborate on projects, all of which prepare them for successful careers in the tech industry. The program equips students to solve complex problems, drive innovation, and improve lives through technology. Key areas of focus include applied cryptography, mobile computing, and algorithm analysis and design across various programming languages, such as procedural, object-oriented, and low-level languages. Through extensive hands-on experience, students deepen their understanding of computing fundamentals and are well-prepared for real-world challenges.
The program is designed with a career-ready curriculum that emphasizes strong algorithm analysis and design skills. Students have the chance to explore optional courses in functional, parallel, and logical programming paradigms. Extensive lab time is incorporated into the curriculum, allowing students to gain valuable hands-on experience starting from their first year. The program also begins with a solid foundation, offering critical background knowledge to ensure success, no matter a student’s prior computer science experience. In the later years of the program, students can personalize their degree by selecting courses in specialized areas such as internet computing, mobile app development, applied cryptography, and quantum computing, among others. This approach ensures that students are well-equipped to thrive in the ever-evolving field of computer science.
