Veterinary Technician

Fanshawe College’s Veterinary Technician diploma program is a two-year program designed to prepare students for a rewarding career supporting animal health and veterinary medicine. Through a comprehensive curriculum and instruction from experienced faculty, students develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to work effectively as part of a veterinary team. The program provides a strong scientific foundation in areas such as anatomy and physiology, animal behaviour, veterinary terminology, pharmacology, and nutrition, while also introducing key aspects of veterinary clinical practice.

Students gain extensive hands-on experience in veterinary nursing, laboratory procedures, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, and surgical assistance while working with a variety of animals, including companion animals, large animals, laboratory animals, and exotic species. Field placements allow students to apply their learning in real clinical environments, building professional confidence and technical competence. Graduates of the program are prepared to support veterinarians in delivering high-quality animal care and pursue careers in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, research facilities, and other animal health settings.

Admission Requirements

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status.

What You’ll Learn

• Perform veterinary nursing tasks, including patient care, anesthesia monitoring, and surgical assistance.
• Conduct laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, and sample analysis to support veterinary diagnoses.
• Safely handle and care for companion animals, large animals, exotic species, and laboratory animals.
• Apply veterinary pharmacology, nutrition, and clinical procedures to support animal health and treatment.
