Université du Québec à Montréal’s Master of Social Work program is designed to deepen and strengthen advanced social work practice within diverse urban and multicultural contexts. The program promotes a vision of social work rooted in human rights, social justice, and the empowerment of individuals and communities experiencing marginalization, exclusion, or inequality. Students are encouraged to critically examine social policies, programs, and intervention practices while developing a broad understanding of the social, cultural, economic, and political factors that shape contemporary social issues. With a strong emphasis on reflective and critical practice, the program prepares students to engage thoughtfully with the evolving realities of social work in a globalized society.
The program offers two pathways: a research thesis option and an intervention thesis option, allowing students to tailor their studies to academic research or advanced professional practice. Throughout the program, students deepen their expertise in a specialized field of intervention while strengthening research, analytical, and reflective skills that consider class, gender, interethnic, and intergenerational dynamics within multicultural settings. Students also learn to integrate theoretical, methodological, experiential, and practical knowledge to design innovative interventions and meaningful social initiatives. Recognized by the Professional Order of Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists of Quebec, the program prepares graduates for leadership, advanced practice, and continued contribution to inclusive and socially just communities.
