The Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate program at Vancouver Island University (VIU) provides comprehensive training designed to prepare students for entry into the heavy construction and road building industries. The program combines the Road Builder & Heavy Construction Foundation course and the Heavy Equipment Operator Technician course with specialized machine operator training, resulting in a total program length of approximately 10 to 17 weeks depending on the equipment selected. Through both classroom learning and practical instruction, students develop the technical knowledge, operational skills, and safety awareness needed to work effectively in heavy equipment operations.
In addition to foundational and technician training, students choose one or more specialized machine operator courses to build expertise on specific equipment such as excavators, backhoes, dozers, graders, articulated rock trucks, front-end loaders, skid steers, or dump trucks. The program also includes a four-week work experience component that provides valuable industry exposure and real-world job site experience. Upon completion, graduates receive Foundation and Technician certificates along with specialty certificates for the machines they trained on, helping prepare them for a range of careers in the construction and heavy equipment sectors.
Tuition based on Specialized Machine Operator Training: Excavator.
