Fleming College’s compressed Hairstyling program, designed by award-winning industry professionals, combines extensive hands-on training and theory to prepare students for a career as licensed professional hairstylist. Students will learn and practice the latest skills in hairstyling techniques, including cutting, styling, naturally derived smoothing treatment, colouring, hair extensions and multicultural hairstyling in the newly designed on-campus salon within Fleming’s Spa + Clinic multidisciplinary environment.
Community involvement is an important cornerstone within Fleming. In the final semester students will take part in community outreach days, practicing their skills and building relationships with marginalized groups. Students in the graduating semester also organize and deliver a unique hair show with local community partners. This program also offers the opportunity to gain the Indigenous Perspectives Designation.
The program includes two unique 120-hour experiential learning practicums: Academy Salon 1 in semester two, and Academy Salon 2 in semester three. During the first practicum, students will work on clients and participate in creating an exceptional salon experience, from the initial greeting, consultation, preparation, service, and client haircare. In the second practicum, stylists will continue to develop professional skills in shape, colour, and session styling. Students will also be fully immersed in all daily business activities, with a focus on client rapport building, retention, retail expertise, and overall exceptional client experiences. The Academy Salon will provide a platform to build the soft skills to become a well-rounded professional.
