Athabasca University’s Master of Education – Open, Digital, and Distance Education empowers learners with the skills required to succeed as educators from a distance. Athabasca has been aiding students in their distanced education since 1994, and has evolved their program throughout the decades to suit the needs of the changing educator.

Students will get first hand experience in curriculum development, budgeting, and program management meaning they will be prepared to teach at educational institutions, work in health care, or business leadership.

Learners will have four areas of focus that they may follow after completing all core and prescribed electives, including Leadership in Education, Instructional Design, Mobile Learning, and K-12 Blended and Online Learning. These areas of focus will prepare graduates for careers in their respective fields including roles as distance education coordinators, online education managers, e-learning project managers, or learning management system administrators. This program can be completed in as little as two years, or can be extended to six years from the original start date.

  • Baccalaureate Degree from a recognized post secondary institution, or equivalent to be considered if put forward by the applicant.
  • English language proficiency.

I am a current student enrolled in the Bachelor of General Studies. I am sharing my experience because I believe there is a lack of administrative accountability at Athabasca University regarding student support. Despite providing documentation of a significant life crisis (Police Report Dec 17) and a high-risk medical situation, the administration failed to apply Section 2.1 of the Student Appeals Policy regarding Extenuating Circumstances. Instead of administrative fairness and the 'Duty of Compassion' expected of a public institution, I encountered rigid barriers and an unjustified academic suspension. I have had to involve the University Ombudsman to have my rights as a student recognized. Prospective students should be aware of this lack of policy compliance.

Program was well designed with a Degreeworx page that tracks progress to completion including course requirements. Staff were very helpful and professors responsive. Perfect for anyone who has the capacity to learn independently and prefers that to a classroom setting or for busy people with jobs and kids. Course material was also mostly very interesting and applicable to my career in business.
