Today, Data Scientists play an integral role in helping companies both big and small predict industry trends, launch new products, and innovate based on consumer needs. Data Science is all about extracting insights from data to drive decision making, and is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing and in-demand disciplines in technology today. It requires statistical analysis and programming fundamentals, two core skills that allow Data Scientists to make predictive decisions derived from large data sets. If you think of any major data-driven tech company – Amazon, Netflix, Google – the work of Data Scientists is crucial to their customer experience and success.

This course introduces students to statistical analysis using Python and gradually builds into learning and applying programmed models that can derive insights from common data sets such as CSV’s and Databases. By the end of this course students will have an understanding of how to import CSV’s of data into a Python environment and perform analysis. Additionally, students will learn more about the online Data Science communities and how people share and study data collaboratively.

Prerequisites

We recommend students have the following knowledge going into the course:

  • Introductory programming experience, Python preferred
  • Introductory statistics
  • Completion of BrainStation’s Data Analytics course is highly recommended

I attended the first cohort of this course. It was overall a good experience but because it was their second time delivering this course, it wasn't delivered as smoothly / as organized as I would've liked. On the part of the instructor, too much time spent on going through lessons and not enough time spent on application of the lessons. He also spoke quickly and a number of people complained that they weren't learning from him because of that. They didn't cover Seaborn for plotting at all in the course which I thought was a mistake (only covered matplotlib).

Overall, you got out of the course what you put in...there wasn't much pressure to do the homework or do a good job on the final project, for example...but, if you did, you'd get a good amount of knowledge out of it. Many people in the class slacked off as a result. I would've preferred a more competitive / slightly higher pressure atmosphere as that tends to lead to better learning for everyone. Also, I think the teaching could have been significantly better.

I took Brainstation’s part-time Web Dev course.

For me BrainStation's Intro to Web Dev course seemed like a great option to dip my toes into the world of HTML and CSS. Taking a full-fledged coding bootcamp felt way to risky, given the fact that I have never coded/worked in the industry before.

The course is geared towards people with little to no experience in coding, but I would say that a tiny bit of knowledge of HTML would probably be helpful in the beginning, but not entirely necessary, as the first couple of classes are dedicated to going over the basics.

The course is taught by people currently working in the industry which allows them to be able to relate the content to real life examples from their day to day activities, in turn making the course feel much more grounded in reality.

Each class has a hands-on project which I found to be key to quickly understand each concept covered throughout the "lecture". Instructors go over the projects to clarify any questions and are always available to help and guide through finding a solution if you are stuck.

It was remarkable to see how far I got in just 10 weeks. I went from only knowing a few bits of HTML elements - but not well enough to create even a basic site - to having actually created a site to be used as my resume, it works well and looks professional, something that I wouldn't be embarrassed to show to others.
