For students working toward a career in medicine, a related biomedical or allied health profession, or wondered what biomedical science courses can help prepare for medical school or a career in a health science-related field. This University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies Fundamentals of Biomedical Sciences certificate program will build on basic science knowledge and skills while exposing students to one of the world’s great medical and research centres.
Working with instructors from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine, students learn basic biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, and/or anatomy, while networking with both domestic and international students. Students will acquire foundational knowledge of all major areas of human physiology and biochemistry, and learn how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and eliminates drugs. Each course will provide a variety of medical perspectives that will expand on the learner’s curiosity. Regardless of career goals, this certificate will serve as the bridge between undergraduate studies and pre-med, pharmacy, nursing, or medicine.

Do I have to be a University of Toronto student or alumnus to apply for courses at the School of Continuing Studies?
No. All adults are welcome to apply for courses at the School regardless of prior academic background.
Can I apply the courses I take at the School of Continuing Studies for credit towards a degree program at the University of Toronto?
No. Courses taken at the School of Continuing Studies do not carry University of Toronto degree credit.
Will I gain admission to the University of Toronto if I take courses at the School of Continuing Studies?
No. Acceptance into the University of Toronto cannot be attained by completing courses at the School of Continuing Studies. You must apply for admission to degree programs, either through the Office of Admissions and Awards or through the School of Graduate Studies.
Do I have to register in a certificate before taking courses?
You do not have to register in a certificate before enrolling in courses that are requirements in the certificate program. When you have satisfied all certificate requirements in the prescribed time limit, you simply fill out the Certificate Request Form, send it to the School by email, fax or mail, and then wait for the certificate to be mailed to your preferred address. Although it is not necessary to register in a certificate before enrolling in courses, we do recommend that you notify us of your intention to pursue a certificate when you register for your first course. We will be able to track your progress and notify you of any updates or changes to the program.
Will the courses I take at the School of Continuing Studies affect my GPA at the University of Toronto?
All courses taken through the School of Continuing Studies are non-degree, non-credit. Final grades achieved for the School’s courses will not affect your GPA for degree studies at the University of Toronto.
I have a degree from another country. Can your institution do an evaluation of my degree?

Can I get a student visa if I study at the School of Continuing Studies?
Our full-time English as a Second Language Program is the only course or program offered by the School that may entitle you to qualify for a student visa. Check with the nearest Canadian visa office to make sure you have enough time to get the proper documents, if required. View the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website for more information.
