In York University’s Cinema & Media Arts – Production (BFA) program, students learn the art of filmmaking from every angle—whether it’s directing, cinematography, editing or sound design. Learners dive into the world of storytelling, creating projects that inspire, entertain and make a difference. With the support of experienced faculty and access to top-notch facilities, this program sets graduates up for an exciting career in film, TV, digital media and beyond.

Foundational courses in production and screenwriting lead to specialized courses in directing, cinematography, editing, sound, production management and production design. With extensive opportunities for collaboration and networking, including a field placement option, students work with professional actors in world-class facilities on campus and at Cinespace Film Studios to create short fiction, documentary and experimental films. Working in crews and learning how to collaborate creatively is one of the most important experiences of the 4-year program. Courses in film history and cinema theory empower students to develop their ability not only to make moving images but to think, talk and write about them, and to understand the historical and theoretical framework in which they are produced.

York’s Engineering program was a solid, hands-on experience that really pushed me to learn by doing. Instead of just focusing on exams, a lot of the learning came from projects where we had to figure things out, debug our own mistakes, and make designs actually work. I picked up practical skills like coding, breaking down complex systems, and explaining technical ideas clearly to teammates. By the end of the program, I felt much more comfortable tackling new problems and learning on the fly, which has been one of the most useful outcomes after graduating.

I found York's Engineering program challenging but practical in a good way. I learned core skills like programming, circuit analysis, and system design, and got to apply them through hands-on labs and group projects. Working on design assignments and team-based projects helped me build real problem-solving skills and confidence that carried over into the workplace.
