The BCIT New Media Design and Web Development diploma program is an intense, multi-disciplinary, 18-month program. Students will learn to design media projects (interface, navigation, graphics, text treatment), create visually appealing stories and dynamic, rich multimedia content, effectively integrate social media campaigns, and build user-friendly websites and mobile applications.

In the final term, students will participate in a nine-week internship. This internship provides valuable work experience that may lead to a job offer from the sponsoring organization or a strong reference for future business or employment.

Students will also develop a digital portfolio to present their best work to potential employers and clients. Most employers and potential clients want to see examples of personal and academic work as proof of abilities, and through this program, students will be able to display their advanced skills quickly and easily.

What You’ll Learn

  • Create and manage interactive content using Adobe Creative Cloud and current new media development tools.
  • Research, write, report, document, store, and package information in a variety of formats for print and interactive media.
  • Develop new media products using industry standards in graphic, web, and mobile design for specific audiences and purposes.
  • Integrate content strategy with information architecture (IA), and user interface design (UI) and user experience (UX).
  • Plan, and design user interface (UI) prototypes for usability, accessibility and user experience (UX) inspections and testing.
  • Develop and manage static and dynamic websites using programming standards, content management systems (CMS) and versioning control frameworks.
  • Analyze and model requirements and constraints for the design of databases, stand-alone, media and mobile applications.
  • Manage projects under waterfall and agile systems. Explain workflow of digital media production.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership skills when working autonomously and in multidisciplinary teams.

In my opinion, it's a world-class facility when it comes to teaching trades and technology. I've taken a lot of post-secondary education at more places than I care to admit, and the courses I took at BCIT were among the best overall.

I took a variety of classes in Business Admin and then - a few years later - in Web Design. When I left the classes, I felt as though I'd really learned something useful that I could apply right away. (Other places tend to give you a lot of theory, but you're not always confident that you could apply those skills right away.)

I worked in the Human Resources sector for a few years, and someone with a BCIT program on their resume was someone whose resume got read. If you have a chance to study there, take it.
