The Bachelor of Fine Arts – Acting program in the Department of Theatre and Film does not follow the typical program of a traditional acting school. The University of British Columbia program combines professional acting training with a solid grounding in theatre history and a liberal arts education.

The BFA Acting program focuses on the development of the actor’s instrument and as they progress through their degree they will study and develop their own acting styles and disciplines.

Admission into the BFA Acting program at UBC is limited and is based on each individual’s audition and supplemental application information.

In the first two years, students pursuing a degree in acting will focus on storytelling, improvisation, scene study, movement and voice. In their third year, we cover the study and practice of acting styles including Commedia dell’arte, Chekhov and Shakespeare.

The fourth-year incorporates screen acting, auditioning, solo creation, singing, voice-over and stage combat. Additionally, their courses are fully integrated with theatre productions and students will have the opportunity to act in shows and work with guest artists and industry professionals.

Things I loved about this program: BC and Vancouver are a mecca for film production and have so many film locations and job opportunities, not only within Canada, but from productions around the world that shoot here. You will be part of a tightly knit group of maybe 20 students who will become great friends. And UBC has a stellar reputation that will help on your resume. This is a great uni and program for anyone seriously interested in this career.

12 hour clinical rotations and school work, keeping up with exercise and a social life -- it's all stressful. UBC will push you, because hospitals will push you. I volunteered at BC Children's before applying to get an idea of what I was getting into. I recommend you do the same.

I am in year three and started in biology. The UBC-Vancouver program goes for 20 months. Okanagan has a direct entry program if you want to start in nursing right away. Both are really good programs and I'm happy to be here. The acceptance rate is around 20% each year.

Talking to people ahead of me in the program and recent grads, I know there will be excellent work opportunities waiting for me when I graduate. Just make sure you know what you are signing up for!
