In BCIT’s Photography course, students will learn about camera tools and apply various photographic techniques to enhance their images. Topics covered include aperture settings, ISO, shutter speeds, on and off-camera flash, depth of field, lens selection, and compositional principles. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on lab sessions, students will also explore lighting for portrait photography, low-light techniques, the use of tripods, and important camera settings such as histograms and self-timers, along with camera maintenance and cleaning.

Students must have access to a DSLR or mirrorless camera system that includes a lens and memory card; a tripod is recommended but not mandatory. The camera must offer full manual control over all settings and be capable of capturing images in RAW file format. Most DSLR and mirrorless systems available today will meet these requirements. While off-camera flash equipment is beneficial, it is not necessary for the first class.

This is not a self-paced course; attendance is required during the scheduled days and times listed in the registration. A stable internet connection is essential for accessing course materials. Students will also need access to Adobe Creative Cloud to complete this course.

What You’ll Learn

  • Define the tools in a 35mm digital camera.
  • Analyze a photograph for technical details.
  • Apply compositional techniques into images.
  • Explore alternative lighting sources to create visual impact.
  • Evaluate a scene prior to capturing.
  • Develop a personal system of photo‐file management.
  • Enhance images using different camera settings and filters.
  • Differentiate between a strong image and a weak image.
  • Demonstrate the three main exposure tools.
  • Recognize the appropriate lighting conditions for the subject.

In my opinion, it's a world-class facility when it comes to teaching trades and technology. I've taken a lot of post-secondary education at more places than I care to admit, and the courses I took at BCIT were among the best overall.

I took a variety of classes in Business Admin and then - a few years later - in Web Design. When I left the classes, I felt as though I'd really learned something useful that I could apply right away. (Other places tend to give you a lot of theory, but you're not always confident that you could apply those skills right away.)

I worked in the Human Resources sector for a few years, and someone with a BCIT program on their resume was someone whose resume got read. If you have a chance to study there, take it.
