After completing Western’s Common First Year, students can opt to enroll in the Civil Engineering program, which offers in-depth technical training in both structural and environmental domains.

Students will be prepared for one of three options during their second year, Structural Engineering; Environmental Engineering; or International Development paired with either Structural or Environmental Engineering, which they will then move on to tackle during their third year of studies at Western.

Structural Engineering students take courses in areas like reinforced and prestressed concrete design, steel design, structural dynamics, soil mechanics, finite element methods, plus sustainability, ethics and engineering law. Environmental Engineering focuses on designing sustainable infrastructure, managing water quality, treating waste, and addressing climate adaptation challenges. The International Development option adds a global or community perspective, challenging students to handle real-life societal, political, and economic dimensions through a summer placement and design project.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.
  • Minimum average of 60 percent.

What You’ll Learn

  • Design and analyze structures, materials, and geotechnical systems that support modern infrastructure.
  • Expertise in sustainable design, water management, and environmental protection practices.
  • A global perspective on engineering through options like International Development and dual-degree pathways.
