Bachelor of Social Work

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at Carleton University provides a comprehensive and critically grounded education that prepares students for professional practice across diverse social contexts. The curriculum begins with foundational courses exploring the structure and evolution of the Canadian welfare state, the development of the social work profession, and the relationship between social welfare, social justice, and social change. As students progress, they engage deeply with structural social work theory, political economy, ethics, and values, building a strong analytical framework to understand systemic inequality and social issues. Core practice courses develop essential skills in working with individuals, families, groups, and communities, with a focus on communication, empathy, collaboration, and professional self-awareness.

At the advanced level, the program emphasizes applied learning, research competence, and specialized knowledge areas such as social policy development, human rights practice, immigration, aging, disability, racialization, and gender and sexuality. Students gain hands-on experience through extensive practicum placements, integrating theory with real-world practice in community settings under professional supervision. Research and statistical training further equip students to evaluate and contribute to evidence-based practice. The program culminates in advanced practice courses and a second practicum, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for ethical, informed, and impactful social work in a variety of professional environments.
