Langara College’s Social Service Worker program provides students with a focused pathway into the social services field, preparing them for immediate entry-level employment as well as further study in social work and related helping professions. Delivered in a supportive cohort model, the program is taught by dedicated faculty and emphasizes experiential learning, professional development, and the emotional and ethical demands of working with diverse populations. Students build foundational knowledge and skills while developing a strong professional network that supports both academic and career growth.
The program combines two semesters of full-time study with applied learning opportunities, including two practicum placements and a five-week full-time field placement at the end of the second semester. Through these experiences, students gain hands-on exposure to real-world social service environments and develop practical competencies in client support, communication, and ethical practice. Graduates earn a Social Service Worker Certificate, with the second year earning a coordinated Diploma by completing additional arts and sciences credits, further expanding their academic and professional opportunities within the helping professions.
