Thompson Rivers University’s Human Services Diploma program prepares students for entry-level careers in community and government agencies that support individuals and families facing a wide range of social challenges. The program focuses on helping learners build the skills needed to work with populations experiencing economic disadvantage, mental health concerns, substance use issues, developmental and gender-related challenges, and involvement with the justice system. Through a combination of theory and applied learning, students develop a strong foundation in interpersonal communication, helping relationships, and human service practice.

The curriculum progresses across two years of study, beginning with foundational courses in communication, family systems, Indigenous-informed practice, mental health and addictions, and professional human service roles, followed by advanced learning in counselling skills, trauma-informed care, group work, social welfare, and legal or policy contexts. Field education placements in both years provide hands-on experience in real community settings, allowing students to apply their learning while developing professional competence. Graduates are equipped with transferable skills that prepare them for diverse roles in social services, child and youth care, mental health support, and community-based programs.

The final exam questions do not have anything to do with the actual learning material. They expect you to memorize the whole text and ask questions that do not apply to the actual subject matter. Extremely disappointed in TRU.

I recently completed the online MBA program at Thompson Rivers University, and it was a great experience overall. The flexibility of the program made it easy to balance my studies with full-time work, and the courses were practical and relevant to real business situations. The professors were supportive and responsive, which made the online format feel more personal. It wasn’t overly fast-paced, but that worked well for me since I could learn at my own speed. Overall, I found the program affordable, well-structured, and a solid choice for professionals looking to move forward in their careers.
