Vancouver Island University’s Social Services Diploma program prepares students for meaningful careers supporting individuals and communities through compassionate, inclusive, and equity-focused practice. The program emphasizes the importance of diversity, empathy, and collaboration while building a strong foundation in key areas such as developmental psychology, child and adolescent development, trauma resiliency, and conflict resolution. Students are encouraged to become advocates for human rights and social justice, developing the knowledge and skills needed to support vulnerable populations and contribute to stronger, more inclusive communities.

The curriculum combines academic study with applied learning, covering topics such as addictions and treatment, community development, leadership, interpersonal communication, and social work practice. Through workplace-based projects, electives, and a field education component, students integrate theory into real-world practice while gaining hands-on experience in social service settings. Graduates are prepared for a range of roles, including human service assistant, probation officer, rehabilitation counsellor, and community support worker, with the skills and confidence to make a positive impact in diverse professional environments.
