The Practical Nursing program at Mohawk College prepares students to become Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), offering a rewarding healthcare career with diverse opportunities. The program combines online and in-person courses, providing a hybrid learning experience that supports work-life balance. Students complete the program in 16 consecutive months and have access to various pathways for further education. The program includes theory courses each semester, delivered online with mandatory in-person midterm and final exams. Lab-based courses feature weekly in-person labs, while clinical practice courses are held at healthcare agencies, with shifts scheduled during the week or on weekends.

In the first semester, students complete two 7-hour shifts per week, increasing to one 12-hour shift per week in the second and third semesters. In the final semester, students complete 40 hours per week of clinical practice over seven weeks. Students can choose from various timetable options, with morning, afternoon, or evening schedules available.

The curriculum is grounded in the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) RPN Entry-to-Practice Competencies and focuses on acquiring the knowledge, skills, and accountability required for nursing practice. Faculty members provide guidance, support, and feedback throughout the program, ensuring students are well-prepared for professional practice.

This is my second time attending this college, when I attended years ago it was a very different experience. The school held many events, frosh week was always a blast, the campus is massive, free gym membership on campus, and they have great selection of food, downside was parking was usually a nightmare. This year is a bit different, with classes online its a bit hectic, confusing and I knew it would be. In my course the professors are very supportive, the layout is making a bit more sense each day, the it department have been fantastic. One thing I will say is that it can be a bit difficult to get some answers from certain departments, but my course professors are doing a great job so far!

A great college, excellent faculty, and programs: check out the General Arts and Science Program if you aren’t sure about your next step in your academic journey - they also have a university transfer program. Why spend an extra year at high school when you can get credit for college and university programs.
