The Heavy Equipment Operator program at the College of the North Atlantic provides students with comprehensive training in the safe and effective operation of heavy-duty earthmoving equipment. The program equips learners with the knowledge and skills required to perform essential tasks such as operating machinery, conducting preventative maintenance, and understanding machine capabilities in line with industry expectations. Students gain practical experience with a variety of equipment, including dozers, front-end loaders, graders, tandem and off-highway dump trucks, tractor-loader-backhoes (TLBs), and excavators, preparing them for the diverse demands of construction and municipal projects.

Throughout the program, students develop proficiency in basic machine maneuvering, control, and operation through work-simulated projects. Emphasis is placed on servicing techniques to maximize equipment lifespan, adherence to road construction standards, and safe work practices including the proper use of personal protective equipment. Graduates leave the program with the technical skills, operational knowledge, and safety awareness needed to meet industry standards and excel in careers as heavy equipment operators.
