A computer-aided-design (CAD) technician supports engineering to create definition of ideas, parts, and assemblies in the form of 3D models and engineering drawings that specify size, shape, materials, and other specifications. These models and drawings are then used to support analysis, manufacturing, assembly, tooling, quality and inspection within cost, quality, and schedule.

In this CAD Technician – Mechanical program, students are introduced to mechanical design disciplines and become familiar with the many opportunities that are available in other graphic related fields.

Problem-solving abilities, design and drafting skills are honed through practical assignments, where students think through the process of 3D model and drawing development. Production of drawings using CAD is a significant component. 3D solid modelling and parametric concepts are introduced and utilized. Other computer applications are used to produce documents related to the manufacturing, marketing, and use of the products.

Technical mathematics and communications specific to these fields are integrated. Students develop planning, research, and analytical abilities through design project work. Students also participate in a work placement that provides invaluable on-the-job training.
