Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Technology

Dalhousie University’s Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Technology program is a four-year Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) degree designed to develop students into competent and skilled diagnostic medical sonographers. The program combines rigorous theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on practice, providing a strong foundation in human anatomy, physiology, physics, and sonography-specific knowledge. Students progress through core professional development courses and ultrasound-focused training, gaining the technical skills necessary to produce high-quality diagnostic images and perform clinical procedures. A diploma option is available after the completion of Year 3, offering flexibility for students seeking an earlier credential.

Throughout the program, students participate in multiple clinical practicums and interprofessional health education activities, allowing them to apply their learning in real-world healthcare settings and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams. The curriculum emphasizes specialized training in areas such as obstetrics and gynecology, abdominal and superficial structures, cardiac and vascular sonography, and advanced ultrasound instrumentation. Graduates acquire the competencies required to challenge the Sonography Canada professional examinations, preparing them for careers as skilled diagnostic medical sonographers capable of delivering high-quality patient care in diverse healthcare environments.
