Mohawk College’s Nephrology Nursing program is designed to equip Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) with the specialized knowledge and skills needed to care for patients with kidney disease. As the number of Canadians at risk for or living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to rise—due to factors such as an aging population and the increasing prevalence of diabetes and hypertension—this program addresses the growing need for trained professionals in nephrology nursing.

The curriculum prepares nursing professionals to provide care across all stages of the kidney disease journey, from early detection through to dialysis, transplant, and palliative care. Students will develop the expertise to deliver competent, safe, and ethical care to individuals affected by kidney disease or insufficiency. Emphasizing a patient-centered approach, the program teaches nurses how to assess and manage kidney function, understand renal replacement therapies, and provide education and support to patients navigating life with chronic kidney disease. With a focus on practical skills and theoretical knowledge, graduates will be equipped to make a significant impact in this vital and expanding field of healthcare.

Admission Requirements

  • Current RN/RPN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario or a graduate nurse registration with your respective provincial/territory regulator.

What You’ll Learn

  • Develop specialized knowledge in managing chronic kidney disease across all stages.
  • Learn to provide care for patients undergoing dialysis, including both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of renal replacement therapies and their application in clinical settings.
  • Learn to assess and monitor kidney function, both normal and abnormal, in various patient populations.
  • Acquire skills in providing palliative and transplant care for patients with advanced kidney disease.
  • Understand the psychosocial aspects of living with chronic kidney disease and provide supportive care.

This is my second time attending this college, when I attended years ago it was a very different experience. The school held many events, frosh week was always a blast, the campus is massive, free gym membership on campus, and they have great selection of food, downside was parking was usually a nightmare. This year is a bit different, with classes online its a bit hectic, confusing and I knew it would be. In my course the professors are very supportive, the layout is making a bit more sense each day, the it department have been fantastic. One thing I will say is that it can be a bit difficult to get some answers from certain departments, but my course professors are doing a great job so far!
