Mohawk College’s Nephrology Nursing program is designed to equip Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) with the specialized knowledge and skills needed to care for patients with kidney disease. As the number of Canadians at risk for or living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to rise—due to factors such as an aging population and the increasing prevalence of diabetes and hypertension—this program addresses the growing need for trained professionals in nephrology nursing.
The curriculum prepares nursing professionals to provide care across all stages of the kidney disease journey, from early detection through to dialysis, transplant, and palliative care. Students will develop the expertise to deliver competent, safe, and ethical care to individuals affected by kidney disease or insufficiency. Emphasizing a patient-centered approach, the program teaches nurses how to assess and manage kidney function, understand renal replacement therapies, and provide education and support to patients navigating life with chronic kidney disease. With a focus on practical skills and theoretical knowledge, graduates will be equipped to make a significant impact in this vital and expanding field of healthcare.
