The Police Foundations program at Mohawk College prepares students for a rewarding career in public safety, policing, and criminal justice by providing both theoretical knowledge and practical application skills. Students follow guidelines set by the Ministry of the Solicitor General for Ontario, and after completing a common first year, they can transfer into second-year programs such as Community and Justice Services or Protection, Security, and Investigation. The program includes training in essential skills, such as use of force, tactical communication, and interviewing and investigation techniques. Students also gain valuable experience through co-op work terms, although specific requirements must be met before participation.
Emphasizing physical fitness, wellness, and stress reduction, the program helps students prepare for the fitness standards required in law enforcement careers. Key areas of learning include criminal, civil, and provincial laws, ethics and diversity in policing, evidence principles, and an understanding of police powers and related legislation. Additionally, students develop skills in conflict resolution, career development, and wellness, ensuring they are well-prepared for the demands of emergency service careers.
