Power Engineering Techniques

The Power Engineering Techniques program at Mohawk College provides students with the academic and practical skills necessary to excel in the field of power engineering. Accredited by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), this program offers students the unique opportunity to reduce their operator time towards certification. Taught by certified Operating Engineers, the program focuses on the operation and maintenance of facility equipment related to steam and power generation, with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning.

Students will develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed to diagnose, troubleshoot, and service complex power operating systems, including boiler systems, climate control instrumentation, wastewater treatment, refrigeration components, compressors, turbines, and pressure vessel systems—all in compliance with TSSA and environmental regulations. The program also covers the fundamentals of electrical calculations, thermodynamics, applied mechanics, and the testing and analysis of power systems.

With a focus on safe working practices and quality control, students are trained to manage power systems responsibly, including fire protection and plant safety. Graduates will be well-equipped to pursue certifications from 4th Class to 1st Class Power Engineer, with ample opportunities for professional growth and career advancement in a high-demand field.

Admission Requirements

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.

What You’ll Learn

• Explore the use of steam firetube boilers, air compressors, refrigeration chillers, chemical feed pumps and various auxiliary equipment.
• Understand the use of prime movers, turbines, and co-generation processes.
• Understand the importance of electrotechnology, instrumentation, combustion and the environmental impacts in a steam plant.
• Prepare for the Technical Standards and Safety Authority 4th Class Power Operating Engineering exams, both 4A and 4B.
