In the University of Waterloo’s Biomedical Sciences program study human and animal systems and their functions related to health, disease, and the healing process. Students will diversify their knowledge by learning about viruses, bacteria, and other microbes, and how these (along with genetic and environmental influences) can impact health. They will examine how the body ages, how disease and injury impact it, and what diagnostic tools can identify physiological problems.

Students start with foundational courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math that prepare them to meet the admission requirements of most health-related professional schools. After first year, learners will focus on human biology with courses in anatomy, physiology, histology, microbiology, and biochemistry. Students will add some complementary courses from science and related disciplines and then round out their degree with electives of their choice.

Upon graduation,  graduates will have the solid scientific foundation they need to succeed in most health care professions or to pursue specialized Master’s or PhD degrees.

Students can choose to also include one or more of the minors available to all Waterloo students. Popular areas of focus include Psychology, Medical Physiology, Chemistry, Biophysics, and Biochemistry.

I am a recent Mathematics grad from Waterloo. Waterloo offers a range of courses and career opportunities in multiple fields. The coop program offered in most programs further prepares students for full time career and ease of finding a job right out of graduation (almost 2 years work experience right out of graduation). While the school is academically focused and challenging at times, there are always events going on around the campus and people to hang out with. It is what you make it and I think if you are career focused and want to make meaningful connections, Waterloo is the place to be.

It's an amazing university. You can literally watch yourself getting smarter while you study here. The faculty is really good and there are immense opportunities on campus with respect to innovation. It's a tough university and you must study extremely hard to stay here. All in all I'd say it's one of the best universities in the world.
