In the Université Laval Doctorate in Medicine program, students will acquire basic training that will allow them to respond to the needs of the population and communities. Students will be able to identify and analyze clinical problems and make informed decisions about the care to be given to patients. Learners will be able to combine the scientific and relational dimensions of medicine, while taking into account the psychosocial context of the person.

This general training consists of two successive and complementary stages. First, students will take the pre-externship courses in the first three years. Afterwards, students will do their clinical internships of the externship in approximately two years. Students can complete this part of the training in the integrated longitudinal externship (ELI) format in Laval’s partner environments in the region. This first cycle doctorate in medicine will allow learners to continue their studies in medicine by integrating a residency program or to continue their studies in health research.

Admission Requirements

  • Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status in Canada.
  • DEC in science, literature and arts.
  • Minimum level of knowledge of the French language.

What You’ll Learn

  • Pre-externship: made up of courses in large and small groups, workshops and laboratories.

There are two types of externship.: The traditional externship is made up of internships in different disciplines that follow one another in a predetermined order. The integrated longitudinal externship (ELI) offers a continuous internship in family medicine through which the training periods in specialized disciplines are inserted. The traditional externship and the ELI are offered in different training environments .
