Veterinary Assistant

Fanshawe College’s Veterinary Assistant certificate program is a one-year program designed to prepare students to support veterinarians and veterinary technicians in delivering high-quality animal care. The program provides a strong foundation in animal health, behaviour, anatomy, and clinical support, equipping students with the knowledge needed to work confidently in veterinary clinics and animal care environments. Students learn how veterinary teams operate while developing essential skills to assist with patient care, maintain safe clinical environments, and contribute to the daily operations of veterinary practices.

Throughout the program, students gain hands-on training in animal handling, nursing care, grooming, nutrition, laboratory procedures, and basic pharmacology. The curriculum also introduces veterinary medical terminology, mathematics for medication calculations, and the safe handling of domestic, exotic, and laboratory animals. A field placement allows students to apply their knowledge in a real veterinary setting, building practical experience and professional confidence while working alongside veterinary professionals to support the health and well-being of animals.

Admission Requirements

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent,  or mature student status.
