University of Northern British Columbia’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program prepares students for entry-level generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups, and communities. The program places a strong emphasis on social work in northern and remote regions, with particular focus on Indigenous communities, women, anti-oppressive practice, and community-based approaches to research and service delivery. Students examine the impact of social structures and systems, including class, gender, race, and ethnicity, as central components of understanding social issues and supporting equitable practice.

The curriculum combines theoretical learning with practical skill development to prepare students for diverse social work environments. Through Social Work Field Education placements, students gain hands-on experience within agencies and community settings while applying classroom concepts to real-world practice. Placement opportunities are offered both locally and throughout the region, with efforts made to align each student’s interests and learning goals with an appropriate field experience. Graduates develop the professional knowledge, critical thinking, and community-focused skills needed to support individuals and communities across a range of social service contexts.
