The University of Saskatchewan’s Dental Hygiene program prepares students to play a key role in connecting oral and overall health across diverse populations and care settings. Emphasizing prevention, treatment, and health promotion, the program trains dental hygienists to assess, diagnose, and manage a range of oral conditions such as caries, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. Delivered over three years in six terms, the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene is offered during evening hours (5–10 pm) to accommodate daytime commitments. Students gain hands-on experience using advanced technology, including haptic dental simulators and modern clinical facilities, while developing essential skills in treatment planning, therapeutic services, and evidence-informed care.
The curriculum builds progressively, starting with foundational health and behavioral sciences and a strong focus on preventive care. As students advance, they engage in community outreach, deliver oral health education, and manage increasingly complex clinical cases. Pain management, radiographic techniques, and knowledge of dental specialties are introduced to support comprehensive care. Weekly integration seminars promote curriculum-wide learning, and community-based experiences continue through to the final terms, preparing students for both clinical excellence and future academic or leadership opportunities in dental hygiene.
