Cambrian College’s Addictions and Mental Health program is a client-centred diploma designed to prepare students for meaningful frontline careers supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges and substance use disorders. The program combines theory and applied learning to build strong foundations in counselling, case management, treatment approaches, prevention strategies, and addiction science. Students also develop a culturally responsive and inclusive practice perspective, learning how to support diverse populations through ethical, compassionate, and evidence-informed care.

The curriculum includes focused study in areas such as concurrent disorders, trauma-informed practice, cognitive-behavioural strategies, wellness coaching, and community integration, alongside training in diversity-informed care and behavioural addictions. Learning is reinforced through experiential opportunities, including a final-semester field placement or capstone project where students apply their skills in real-world settings as part of a professional care team. Graduates are also supported in completing required educational hours aligned with voluntary certification pathways, preparing them for careers in addiction services, mental health agencies, and community-based support organizations.

Like most international students in Canada, my college experience is characterised by a combination of a positive attitude, pressure and development. The people in Canada are liberal and embrace the culture of the international students hence making the foreigners feel at home. Of course, the first thing I faced upon my arrival to Canadian campuse is that it is quite diverse, and I got to meet so many representatives of various cultural backgrounds, which in turn may result in the development of cross cultural friendships and contacts.

On academic level, I did faced some difficulties as an international student in interacting with teachers or other students in the first years of my study due to different approach to performance of tasks and use of language other than English if the student comes from non-Grammar english speaking country and may also be confronted with the difference in the system of education in the Canadian school. Still, most institutions offer support services ranging from academic advisors, writing center, among others, and language assistance programs to enhance transition.

I also got an opportunity to grow personally and to be able to live happily and comfortably in another country. To be more precise, I had to bear all responsibilities throughout my learning process including financial issues, meals preparation, housing and many other things. Occasionally I also experienced homesickness and culture shock; however, with time it became easy for me to adapt to the culture shock and interact with fellow students from the same country, join cultural organisation form the college among other options.

I would highly highlight that Canada has great work-study programs that enabled me to undertake work experience. Every person faced with the necessity to combine work with the studies knows that it can be useful experience and a way to make money.

Lastly, my experience benefitted me with personal development in terms of outlook in life, forging new friendships, and appreciation of other cultures across the globe, which will be considered as a memorable part of my education and life journey.
