BCIT’s Agile Scrum Methods course provides a practical, hands-on introduction to applying Agile principles within the Scrum framework. Building on foundational Agile knowledge, the course begins with an in-depth exploration of Agile goals and values before moving into real-world Scrum implementation. Through interactive exercises and collaborative learning, participants develop the skills required to apply core Agile practices such as writing user stories, estimating work using relative sizing, reporting metrics, and implementing test-driven development. The course also introduces complementary approaches including Lean and Kanban to help students understand how Agile methodologies support efficient, adaptable software development.
Throughout the course, students work in self-directed teams and gain practical experience performing key Agile roles, including Scrum Master, Product Owner, and Developer, both in in-class activities and in distributed team environments. The program emphasizes strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while preparing learners to operate effectively in modern Agile workplaces. In addition to building real Agile team experience, the course also helps participants prepare to challenge the Professional Scrum Master™ (PSM I) certification exam from Scrum.org. Agile Scrum Methods is a required course in BCIT’s Computer Systems Certificate and serves as a prerequisite for the Agile Product Owner course in the Agile Development Associate Certificate.
What You’ll Learn
- Apply the core values of the Agile Manifesto and implement Agile methods such as Scrum and Lean/Kanban.
- Write and manage user stories, product backlogs, and sprint plans using Agile planning and estimating techniques.
- Collaborate effectively in Agile teams, including distributed and remote Scrum environments.
- Track project progress using Agile metrics, Scrum boards, and burn-down charts while delivering iterative product improvements.

In my opinion, it's a world-class facility when it comes to teaching trades and technology. I've taken a lot of post-secondary education at more places than I care to admit, and the courses I took at BCIT were among the best overall.
I took a variety of classes in Business Admin and then - a few years later - in Web Design. When I left the classes, I felt as though I'd really learned something useful that I could apply right away. (Other places tend to give you a lot of theory, but you're not always confident that you could apply those skills right away.)
I worked in the Human Resources sector for a few years, and someone with a BCIT program on their resume was someone whose resume got read. If you have a chance to study there, take it.
