The Canadian Securities Institute’s Tax Planning course provides financial advisors with a practical understanding of Canadian income tax rules and their role in financial planning. Learners explore how taxes are calculated on personal income tax returns, how investment income is taxed, and how different business structures are treated for tax purposes. The course emphasizes three key tax planning strategies: eliminating, reducing, and deferring taxes payable.

Designed for mutual fund advisors and financial professionals, the course also covers tax minimization techniques, deductions, and non-refundable tax credits. It helps learners develop the knowledge needed to provide general tax guidance based on clients’ individual needs while recognizing when specialized tax expertise is required. The course forms part of the Advanced Mutual Fund Advice program and contributes to education requirements for the PFP® and CFP® designations.

What You’ll Learn

  • Explain the three strategic categories of effective tax planning.
  • Illustrate how federal personal income taxes are calculated.
  • Describe the type of investment returns and what taxation rules apply to them.
  • Differentiate between taxable and non-taxable employee benefits.
  • Explain the various techniques used to minimize taxes.
  • Compare the features of registered plans that are used for non-retirement goals.
  • Identify the types of corporate structures and their relationship to taxes.
