The Automotive – Motive Power Technician program is for individuals who have ever wondered how an engine works or what makes a transmission drive. With an emphasis on motor vehicle technology, this dynamic and inclusive offering’s theoretical and practical Motive Power Technician courses will prepare learners for work in the transportation industry. The trade-relevant skills and knowledge acquired will help to undertake challenging positions in a variety of employment opportunities.
In keeping with Ministry and the Ontario College of Trades standards, the program will deliver content that meets the requirements for Level 1 and Level 2 in-school apprenticeship training. Additionally, students will actively participate in comprehensive hands-on training activities in fully-equipped modern transportation lab facilities.
The program’s co-op option will provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working one term as a paid employee in the field. This opportunity will not only allow students to put classroom learning into practice, but it will also provide valuable contacts for future careers.
What You’ll Learn
- Analyze, diagnose, and solve various motive power system problems by using problem-solving and critical thinking skills and strategies and by applying fundamental knowledge of motor vehicle operation, components, and their interrelationships.
- Diagnose and repair climate control systems in compliance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
- Diagnose and repair engine systems in compliance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
- Diagnose and repair electrical, electronic, personal safety, and emission components and systems in compliance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
- Diagnose and repair drive train components and systems in compliance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
- Diagnose and repair suspension, steering, and brake components and systems in compliance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
- Disassemble and assemble components to required specifications by applying workshop skills and knowledge of basic shop practices.
- Select and use a variety of troubleshooting techniques and test equipment to assess electronic circuits, vehicle systems, and subsystems.
