Durham College’s Mechanical Techniques – Plumbing program is a one-year certificate designed to prepare students for high-demand careers in the plumbing trade. Combining theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on training, the program equips students with the skills required for residential, commercial, and hydronic plumbing systems. Graduates are positioned competitively for entry-level plumbing jobs and apprenticeships, and are eligible for an exemption from Level 1 of the in-school requirements for the plumber 306A apprenticeship training. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, students gain expertise in installation techniques, reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, and applying trade-related mathematics in real-world plumbing contexts.
The program emphasizes compliance with health and safety legislation, industry standards, and the Ontario Building Code, while fostering practical competencies in the installation and maintenance of potable water, drain, waste, and venting systems. Students learn to perform technical measurements, cut and join pipes using a variety of methods, and utilize both traditional and emerging plumbing technologies. With classes and shop sessions running six days a week, graduates leave the program with a strong foundation in both the theory and practical skills essential for success in the plumbing industry.
