Personal support workers (PSWs) are essential members of the healthcare team, providing the majority of direct care in long-term care settings and playing a critical role across hospitals and home environments. This certificate program is designed to prepare individuals for the realities of frontline caregiving in Ontario, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to support patients while maintaining professional boundaries and adhering to relevant healthcare regulations. Students are trained to deliver compassionate, client-centered care that enhances quality of life and supports individuals with diverse health needs.
Through a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on training, the program develops practical competencies in areas such as medication assistance, nutrition support, mobility, and palliative care. It also includes enhanced certifications in hospice palliative care and specialized feeding techniques for individuals with dysphagia. With a strong emphasis on integrated end-of-life care, the program prepares graduates to take on leadership roles in this critical area of healthcare. In addition, students gain valuable insight into cultural sensitivity and strategies for managing occupational stress, ensuring they are well-equipped to provide effective, empathetic care in a variety of settings.
