Seneca’s Social Service Worker program prepares students with the professional knowledge, practical skills, and ethical foundation needed to work effectively within the human services field. The program emphasizes strength-based and trauma-informed approaches that support individuals and communities experiencing trauma, life transitions, and complex social challenges. Through a combination of seminars, collaborative projects, guest lectures, and experiential learning, students build competencies in areas such as mental health, crisis management, supportive counselling, and community development, while also critically examining privilege, bias, and systemic influences on practice.
The curriculum also focuses on developing applied skills in interpersonal communication, teamwork, advocacy, case management, intake and referral processes, and program planning and evaluation. Students gain an understanding of relevant legislation and policies that guide professional practice and support social change across diverse populations, including children, youth, families, and older adults. Field education is a key component of the program, with two unpaid placements totaling 600 hours that provide opportunities to apply classroom learning in real-world settings, build professional networks, and strengthen practical experience in social service environments.
