Writing music for screen and stage today is about teamwork. In this program, you’ll collaborate with your peers in Sheridan’s renowned arts programs and bring projects to life with music. You’ll compose music for animation, video games and apps, film, TV and musical theatre. No other music composition program offers access to these arts programs or provides the broad skill set clients and employers want.

Composing music for screen and stage means being able to take on multiple roles. In this program, you’ll develop a broad skill set. You’ll learn orchestration, recording, mixing and editing. Using the latest technology, you’ll compose music for several of Sheridan’s arts programs, and create a workplace-ready demo reel that showcases your ability to work in a variety of media.

This program brings music and technology together. Many students have either a formal music background or technical experience, but not both. This graduate music certificate builds on your existing skill set, while bridging any gaps in experience you may have. You’ll have classes in music composition, as well as the technical aspects of recording, mixing and sound design.

What You’ll Learn

  • Compose music for at least two of the following: live action dramatic short films, animated short films, live musical theatre or video games.
  • Illustrate competency in at least two of the following areas: producing a score recording session, engineering a score recording session, editing recorded music to fit a given visual sequence, arrange or orchestrate a provided musical idea or composition.
  • Articulate the unique responsibilities of the principal and key production personnel involved in visual media, musical theatre productions or game design.
  • Collaborate with a key creative team in the creation of complementary music accompaniment for a storytelling environment.
  • Create original musical elements and deliver to peer content producers within the Sheridan College student community.
  • Arrange and orchestrate a given composition within the creative and practical constraints of a production.
  • Produce all facets of a score recording session including: writing score parts, contracting musicians, preparation of MIDI or digital “guide tracks”, preparation of click tracks, tempo maps, markers.
  • Contextualize differences between composition and composition for stage, screen and games.
  • Argue the complexities of musical themes and development in milestone productions of film, television, games and musical theatre.
  • Contextualize the various social, political, economic, cultural and artistic influences upon composition for visual media, games and musical theatre throughout history.

I’m in the computer science program at Sheridan college in Oakville. Specifically, I study mobile computing. That means I develop apps for smartphones.

To me, the campus environment is great. The school is known for excellent programs and excellent sports (go Bruins). My program consists of a lot of code writing, collaborating with designers, and trial and error. Our instructors have built apps of their own, which you can download to your phones today. It is great having instructors who actually know what they are talking about.

I knew I wanted to attend Sheridan as soon as I got to the campus tour. The modern design and clean campus made me feel at home and inspired me to work harder on each and every assignment so far. Anyone looking for a great computer science program does not need to look any farther.

There's a weird narrative out there about Sheridan only caring about international students. I'm a domestic student and I finished my advanced diploma in marketing last year, which included the search marketing course. My profs were industry professionals who were extremely helpful and approachable. Most of them knew me by my first name.

I'm working at an agency in downtown Toronto right now and loving every second of it. I highly recommend the school and the program.
