Students in York University’s Cinema & Media Arts – Media Arts (BFA) program will immerse themself in the future of media creation. This innovative program blends hands-on practice with critical studies, covering interactive, immersive and mobile media arts. Students work with cutting-edge technology to create new storyworlds, developing skills in everything from VFX to sound design. With small classes and expert mentorship, this program empowers learners to push the boundaries of storytelling and redefine media.

The Media Arts BFA is built around a series of Media Practice studio courses taken concurrently with courses in writing, media history, theory, and criticism, as well as innovative one-credit “technology knowledge (tech-know)” courses in software that provide flexibility for students to develop their own interests in a very wide and expansive media arts field. The program culminates in a capstone project and field placement in the media industries, preparing graduates for success in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.

Students will build a solid foundation in Media Practice I & II studio classes, where they will be introduced to a wide range skills: camera work and image composition, sound recording and mixing, basic 2D animation and 3D asset creation, worldbuilding, screenwriting and interactive game writing essentials. Learners will also learn to analyze and understand cinema and media in a cultural and economic context through courses that ground media practice in key theoretical concepts and histories

York’s Engineering program was a solid, hands-on experience that really pushed me to learn by doing. Instead of just focusing on exams, a lot of the learning came from projects where we had to figure things out, debug our own mistakes, and make designs actually work. I picked up practical skills like coding, breaking down complex systems, and explaining technical ideas clearly to teammates. By the end of the program, I felt much more comfortable tackling new problems and learning on the fly, which has been one of the most useful outcomes after graduating.

I found York's Engineering program challenging but practical in a good way. I learned core skills like programming, circuit analysis, and system design, and got to apply them through hands-on labs and group projects. Working on design assignments and team-based projects helped me build real problem-solving skills and confidence that carried over into the workplace.
